Hi everyone

I just heard that Park Sunam's latest film *The Silence *will be showing at
a bunch of colleges in the U.S.

Born in Mie in 1936 to colonial Korean migrant workers, Park's life has
been a participant and witness to the troubled history of decolonization,
from the struggle for the rights for ethnic education in the late 1940s
through anti-nuke petition campaign during the Korean War and, of course,
the so-called "Komatsugawa Incident" which resulted in her bestseller
nonfiction book on Yi Jin-u (Ri Chin-u) which formed the basis for
Oshima's *Death
by Hanging *(1968). After a fall out with Chongryun (Soren) she went
independent as a reportage journalist, eventually collaborating with Otsu
Koshiro on artistically (as well as politically) compelling documentaries
in the 1980s.

I saw *The Silence *in Nagoya where, fortunately, there weren't any
right-wing protestors visible, but since then it has joined a string of
"comfort women" related films to be targeted by right-wing criticism. The
film is, in fact, more reflective and contemplative than incendiary, since
it traces Park's three-decade long relation with comfort women survivors as
well as her intriguing conflicts with Shakaito-led initiatives to represent
the survivors.

Anyways, if you are at one of the campuses showing her films, please spread
the words. It is actually her daughter (and producer of *The Silence*) Park
Maeui who is traveling with a video letter from Park Sunam and the film.
