The Kyoto Shinbun has reported that a graduate student at Kyoto University, Hase Ken'ichiro, has discovered notes for four letters that Inabata Katsutaro, known in Japanese film history as the man who imported the Lumiere Cinematograph to Japan, sent to the Lumiere Brothers. The notes are likely transcripts of letters in French Inabata sent from March to October of 1897, and describe the importation of the apparatus. What is wonderful is that Inabata Co. (which still exists), has put the letters on their home page, complete with a Japanese translation by Hori Junji.
