My new book, Cinema Is a Cat: A Cat Lover's Introduction to Film Studies, is now available from the University of Hawai'i Press. Thank you, Aaron and Hiroshi, for your generous blurbs! This book is not specifically about Japanese cinema, but there are several chapters in which I discuss Japanese films, including Neko to Shozo to futari no onna; Neko zamurai; and Janguru taitei Leo. I published a Japanese book (shinsho) with a very similar title in 2011, but this book is not a translated version of it. New chapters and new intro were added, and other chapters were significantly re-written for different target audiences. This book has more illustrations, too! I hope you enjoy, especially those of you cat lovers! Thank you, Daisuke PS I have attached a 20% off order form. I do feel conflicted. Mori has a laudable strength in calling outgroup-think, particularly when it involves persecution of the other.? But I do feel uneasy about Mori?s employmentof Nazi-era analogies. At Oxford in 2015, Mori gavea long lecture about his ?A?. In it, he gave a just-so history of the holocaustand said that the treatment of Aum followers in contemporary Japanwas a manifestation of a similar tribal othering. At the end of ?i?, hewarns, with a filmic quote, that the treatment of people like Mochizuki, andthose she seeks to protect, could escalate to the ?puration sauvage inFrance in 1944. On the one hand, I do feel that holocaust and Nazi history gets too shortshrift in much of Asia and it still needs to be broughtinto popular awareness. On the other hand; I fear that many people?s take-awayfrom such potted comparisons from far away could just lead to other otherings, and that analogies closer to an audience?s experience would obtain greateraccuracy. To cut away two further limbs, I have also seen more coded comparisons toholocaust history completely fail to get home, and seen ones closer to home totallymisfire. So I don?t have any answer or certainty. There?s a screening and Q&A of ?i? at FCCJ on the 12th(when I?ll still be away). http://www.fccj.or.jp/events-calendar/calendar/icalrepeat.detail/2019/11/12/5385/-/sneak-preview-screening-i-documentary-of-the-journalist-i-shimbun-kisha-document.html Roger On Tuesday, 5 November 2019, 21:45:21 GMT+9, Markus Nornes via KineJapan wrote: What a great thing for Mori!? Koenji, home of our Mabashi festival and of the theater Koenji-za--itself home to the Tokyo Documentary Film Festival--has been eyed for decades for major re-development. Residents seemed to defeat the efforts once, but the plan has been revived. It is explained in the attached two comics by Matsumoto Hajime of Shiroto no Ran (Amateur Riot/Revolt), whose recycle shop is in Koenji. If you are able, please come to a "parade" on Sunday Nov 10 that opposes this re-development. Meet at Koenji Chuo Park at 1:30 pm. "Parade" starts at 2:30, proceeding to Asagaya. >From 6 pm to 10 pm, there will be an event at Loft(ten) in Koenji. This describes the situation in English, a year ago. In Japanese, main information is here , and more here , here , and here . There is one article from the above also translated into Korean, here . Please come if you can, and pass this information along to all your friends in Tokyo!!! (If you friends don't read Japanese, the park is here .) What a truly horrifying expression. When I heard that, I asked the distributors. Their position is that Sophia's policy is meant to protect privacy, and that it's a stretch to apply the withdrawal right to this case. I second Marcus's opinion that it's good to air the denialist position. In Shusenjo, they basically crucify themselves, which is probably the real reason they're going after the film. But the right feels they are generally not given the chance to state their case, so they should be happy they had the opportunity. If you have a chance to see the film, you'll see that Dezaki comes from the YouTube realm (rather than TV documentary). He did a previous YouTube post on discrimination in Japan that got serious flaming, and he says this sparked his interest in exploring this territory. BTW, Dezaki says the film has had 75,000 admissions in Japan screenings (and a wide release in Korea). The more it gets attacked, the more it will be seen. Cultural Typhoon 2020: Call for Papers A Port of ?Cranes? in the 21st Century: Mobilities, Exchanges and Histories Cultural Typhoon 2020 (CT2020) will be held in Nagasaki on June 27 ? 28, 2020. It offers a great opportunity to discuss mobilities and exchanges of people, information, and knowledge in the age of globalization. The Port of Nagasaki has been historically called ?Crane Port? because the shape of the port looks like a crane with spread wings. Nagasaki, with its Crane Port, has historically been a point of transit, hosting departures and arrivals between Japan and East Asia, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula; Southeast Asia; and Europe, particularly Portugal and The Netherlands. Nagasaki?s various foods, lifestyles, festivals, architecture, and urban landscape evidence cultural exchange through this transit of people, goods, and ideas. While no cranes can be found living in Nagasaki, it is indeed a ?city of cranes??that is, a city of mobility, which is aptly embodied in the migratory bird?where people, goods, culture, and knowledge move across national borders. To think about the history of Nagasaki is also to (re)consider the history of mobilities of human beings and our transnational cultural exchange, and narratives of industrialization and modernization. Cultural exchange with China and Korea over the centuries; the propagation and suppression of the Christian faith; the import of modern Western scientific knowledge as well as philosophy and literature; the development of modern shipbuilding as part of military and naval modernization; the coal mining industry?s industrialization and the ferrying of resources;, the immigration and, at times, exploitation of workers at sites close to the Nagasaki Port like Gunkanjima; and the devastation brought by war in the form of the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki at the end of the WWII?such phenomena have left a unique impression on the culture of Nagasaki. CT2020 is will be held at University of Nagasaki?s Siebold Campus. The name of the campus comes from the German physician and botanist who founded a private school, Narutaki Juku, where he taught Western science, medicine in particular, during the Edo Period (1603 ? 1868). The Association for Cultural Typhoon (ACT, Japan) is calling for proposals for panels and individual papers for the 2020 annual conference to be held at Siebold Campus, University of Nagasaki, Nagasaki, from June 27?28, 2020. The deadline for application: 31st December, 2019, Japan time 23:00. Focusing on gender and nostalgia, Professor Yingjin Zhang (University of California San Diego) and Dr Yutaka Kubo (Waseda Tsubouchi Theatre Museum) take a multi-directional approach to the study of cinema, working across media and genres to consider the role of exhibiting film and cinema-related materials in East Asia. The Forgotten Presence of Homoeroticism and the HIV Stigma in the Film Archive Through an analysis of the collection of barazoku film (pink films aimed for gay men) related materials at the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum, this paper examines the cinematic and political significance of how Kobayashi Satoru?s 1993 *A White Rose in Santa Monica *represents the Japanese society?s stigma towards people living with HIV in the late 1980s and early 1990s. First I will consider the characteristics of barazoku films since 1982, the role of the audience in the production process, and the importance of somewhat explicit gay sex. By closely looking at Kobayashi?s production notes for *A White Rose in Santa Monica*, this paper reveals how this film may have been Kobayashi?s attempt to reflect the reality of gay men in Japan in the process of pursuing freedom and luridness of barazoku films. Lastly, I not only compare and contrast barazoku films with the characteristics of new queer cinema of the early 1990s but also evaluate the political possibility and limit of Kobayashi films. This double seminar will showcase new research on cinema exhibition in museum spaces. Focusing on gender and nostalgia, Professor Yingjin Zhang (University of California Sa Diego) and Dr Yutaka Kubo (Waseda Tsubouchi Theatre Museum) take a multi-directional approach to the study of cinema, working across media and genres to consider the role of exhibiting film and cinema-related materials in East Asia. Professor Kubo Biography: Yutaka Kubo is Assistant Professor of Film Studies at the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum, Waseda University, Japan. His research interests include Japanese film history and auteur study of Kinoshita Keisuke in particular, queer film theory and criticism, youth and aging in cinema, gender representations in post-3/11 mourning cinema, and archival practices of home movies. His current projects include theorizing the meaning of female premature deaths in coming-of-age films and the consideration of the role of gay pink films in remapping images of HIV/AIDS in Japanese visual culture. Ways of Seeing China in Isaac Julien?s *Ten Thousand Waves.*This paper examines ways of seeing China in Isaac Julian?s 9-screen film installation *Ten Thousand Waves* (2010), which represents a migratory aesthetics based on evocative translocality, interactive crossmediality, and mobile spectatorship. As Julien reconstructs the legend of compassionate Mazu (played by Maggie Cheung) and memories of old and new Shanghai (both embodied by Zhao Tao) in different modes (e.g., elegiac, idyllic, phantasmagoric, nostalgic, and post-nostalgic), his screen images and sounds enter a constant circulation and form an intriguing multi-directional dialogue across a variety of media and genres?cinema, art photography, police rescue footage, calligraphy, painting, poetry, and star performance. In addition to demonstrating the importance of new concepts and new techniques at work in the cross-fertilization of cinema and other visual media in the new millennium, this paper complicates Julien?s political poetics by highlighting his overlooked reception by ethnic Chinese spectators and by reckoning with the specter of Orientalism that refuses to go away despite his renowned repudiation of stereotypes and clich?s and his critical engagement with cosmopolitanism and globalization Professor Zhang Biography: Yingjin Zhang is Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Literature at University of California, San Diego. His English books include *The City in Modern Chinese Literature and Film*(1996), *Encyclopedia of Chinese Film* (1998), *China in a Polycentric World*(1998), *Cinema and Urban Culture in Shanghai* (1999), *Screening China*(2002), *Chinese National Cinema* (2004), *From Underground to Independent* (2006), *Cinema, Space, and Polylocality in a Globalizing China* (2010), *Chinese Film Stars* (2010), *A Companion to Chinese Cinema* (2012), *Liangyou, Kaleidoscopic Modernity and the Shanghai Global Metropolis *(2013), *New Chinese-Language Documentaries *(2015), *A Companion to Modern Chinese Literature* (2016), and *Filming the Everyday* (2017). -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Perhaps the restoration was to go back to the unsubtitledmaster. The dual language subtitles I saw were credited to Hiroko Govaers. Thatwould have been roughly in the 70s. Until then, I would argue that part of thecause for its being unshown in the west at the time was its lack oftranslation (and the coming of the talkies). There would be an argument for using a benshi on this film ? not all ofthe story is clear purely from the pure film, or its intertitles, particularlyat the end. And I don?t agree with 22 f.p.s. I felt that the movement would lookright at about 14 f.p.s., but perhaps contemporary audiences would find thatslow, depending on the accompaniment and presentation, of which there is no mention, here.
