この度、映画『止められるか、俺たちを』の監督・白石和彌と脚本・井上淳一、同作及び『11,25自決の日〜三島由紀夫と若者たち』製作の若松プロダクションは、先日の報道により、第25回KAWASAKIしんゆり映画祭で上映が内定していた映画『主戦場』が、共催の川崎市からの「懸念」を受け上映を中止していたことを知りました。我々はこれに強く抗議し、しんゆり映画祭での上記二作品の上映を取り止めることを決めました。

今回の川崎市による「訴訟に
なっている作品を上映することで、市や映画祭も出演者から訴えられる可能性がある、市がかかわる映画祭で上映するのは難しいのではないか」という「懸念」は明らかに公権力による「検閲」「介入」であり、映画祭側の「出演者に訴えられている作品は上映しないことにした。電話対応に追われるなどのリスクが想定される中、来場者の安全を確保できない事態も考えた。映画祭存続のための、やむを得ない判断」という上映中止の判断もまた、過剰な忖度により、「表現の自由」を殺す行為に他なりません。

公開から半年間、一度も「来場者の安全」を脅かすことなく上映されてきた映画『主戦場』が、しんゆり映画祭での上映の際に一体どんな「安全を確保できない」事態が想定され、起こりうるというのでしょうか？
今回の問題は、「あいちトリエンナーレ2019」の「表現の不自由展・その後」の中止と文化庁が決定した補助金不交付問題、さらに文化庁所管の独立行政法人「日本芸術文化振興会」が、
麻薬取締法違反で有罪判決を受けたピエール瀧氏が出演する「宮本から君へ」の助成金交付内定を「国が薬物を容認するようなメッセージを発信する恐れがある」との理由で取り消した問題など、一連の問題の延長線上にあることは疑いようがありません。このようなことが続けば、表現する側の自主規制やそれを審査や発表したりする側の事前検閲により、表現の自由がさらに奪われていくことになるでしょう。これが敷衍すれば、例えば、『主戦場』のような映画の上映会が「政治的」という理由から公民館など公共の施設で行えないということにもなりかねません。

2014年に釜山国際映画祭でセウォル号沈没事故を追ったドキュメンタリー映画の上映を巡り、上映差し止めを求めた釜山市と映画祭が対立したことがありました。映画祭側は補助金を供出している釜山市からの反対圧力を押し切り作品の上映に踏み切りましたが、結果、世界中の映画人が声を上げて映画祭をサポートし、作品を守る矜持を示した映画祭に今に至るまで大きな賛辞を送っています。
この釜山映画祭の例を見るまでもなく、たとえ国や自治体からの補助金や助成金が出ていたとしても、映画祭には自分たちが選んだ映画を守り、映画と観客を繋ぐ役割があることは明らかです。その義務を自ら放棄するしんゆり映画祭の姿勢に失望の念を禁じえません。

今回の上映取り止めに当たり、一番苦慮したことは、すでに前売り券を買い上映を楽しみにされている観客から映画鑑賞の機会を奪ってしまうということです。特に今回は「役者・井浦新の軌跡」という特集の中での上映です。我々にとって最も大切な俳優の一人であり、若松孝二監督という同じ師匠の薫陶を受けた井浦新氏の映画を見る機会を無くしてもいいものかと悩みました。ですが、井浦新氏は我々の抱く危機感に共鳴し、苦渋の決断に理解を示してくれました。
また、映画祭の運営のために寝る間を惜しんで準備をしているスタッフやボランティアなど、映画を愛する多くの方々がいることも重々承知しています。
当然、我々のこの決断については様々な意見や批判もあると思います。しかし、今ここで抗議の声を上げ、何らかの行動に移さなければ、上映の機会さえ奪われる映画がさらに増え、観客から鑑賞の機会をさらに奪うことになりはしないでしょうか。
『主戦場』のミキ・デザキ監督の「表現の自由を守る努力をしなければ、政府の意向に沿った作品しか上映できなくなる」という言葉を借りるまでもなく、今、ここで同じ映画の作り手として声を上げなければ、我々もまた「表現の自由」を殺す行為に加担したことになってしまうのです。

『止められるか、俺たちを』は、若松孝二監督の若き日を描いた映画です。
若松監督は常々、「映画を武器に世界と闘う」と言っていました。
今、この国は表現の自由を巡る分水嶺に間違いなく立っています。今、映画を武器に何をすべきなのか？
ここで何もしなければ、十年後二十年後に「あの時自分たちは何をしたのか？」と後悔することになりはしないか？
今こそ、若松監督の言葉をもう一度確かめたいと思います。

我々は、『主戦場』に起きた問題もまた、いずれ自分たちにも起こる問題だと考え、しんゆり映画祭と川崎市に強く抗議し、映画祭での上映を取り止めます。

なお、仮に『主戦場』が全く同じ主題を扱いながら真逆の主張に結論づけられる映画だったとしても、我々は同じ行動を起こしていたことを念のため付言させて頂きます。
