是枝裕和監督の舞台あいさつと報道陣に語った概要は以下の通り。

映画祭は何を上映するかが全て。いい作品を発見し、皆さんに届け、皆さんが新しい作品や作家を発見し、作り手と観客がつながっていく場所だ。(25回目を迎えたしんゆり映画祭は)長い時間をかけ地域の皆さんの協力の下に、そうしたことを継続させ、定着させてきた。

それは楽しんでいれば持続するものではなく、主催する側、参加する側、皆さんの努力が続けられて初めて持続できるもので、今回の事態は映画祭を主催する人としてあってはならない、あるまじき判断だ。これは作り手への敬意を欠いているし、皆さんから作品と出合うチャンスを奪う行為だ。

川崎市は共催者で、共催する側が懸念を表明している。(主戦場の上映中止は)懸念の表明がきっかけと聞いているが、共催している側が懸念を表明している場合じゃない。懸念を払拭(ふっしょく)する立場だ。

その共催者の懸念を真に受けて主催者側が作品を取り下げるというのは、もう映画祭の死を意味する。なのでこれを繰り返せば、この映画祭に少なくとも志のある作り手は参加しなくなる。危機的な状況を自ら招いてしまったということを映画祭側は猛省してほしい。

これは皆さんに伝えることではないかもしれないが、皆さんは映画を見るという行為を通して映画祭に参加をしているので危機感を共有してもらい、この先、この映画祭が存続していくためにどういう声を上げなければいけないかを一緒に考えてほしい。

5年前、韓国の釜山映画祭でセウォル号の沈没を巡って制作された「ダイビング・ベル
セウォル号の真実」というドキュメンタリー映画の上映を巡り、釜山市から圧力がかかった。上映を取り下げないなら助成金をカットすると脅しがかかった。だが、映画祭は突っぱねた。上映により予算がカットされ危機を迎えたが、事態を知った僕を含めて日本やアジア中の映画人が主催者への支持を表明するメッセージを送り、映画祭を支えた。映画祭の価値はそうやって高めていくものだ。今回しんゆり映画祭が取った判断は釜山映画祭とは真逆のものだ。なぜ釜山映画祭を教訓にできなかったのか、残念でならない。いまからでも遅くないので、どういう善後策が取れるのか主催者側は代表に任せるのではなくて、皆で考えてほしい。

しんゆり映画祭での作品上映を取りやめた若松プロダクションと白石和彌監督たちの判断は明快だし、映画祭に対するメッセージとしてはまったく同意だ。ただ自分は日本アカデミー賞も東京国際映画祭も参加して文句を言ってきた。上映があるならその場へ行って違うと言うのがこれまでのスタンスなので、ここへ来た。

川崎市は共催者。懸念があるなら払拭する立場だ。ただ上映をすればよかった。作品はきちんと映画祭側が選考したわけだから、そのプロセスに行政が口を出す権利はない。

主催者が行政の意向をくんで作品を選考していくようになったら映画祭は映画祭として独立しえない。そんな映画祭は尊敬されない。あらゆる作品が上映されるべきだ。作品選びは映画祭側が主体性を持ってやり、尊重されるべきだ。面白いつまらないは見た人が批判すればいい。つまらなければ映画祭から人が去り、淘汰(とうた)されていくだけだ。

市がやるべきだったのは抗議が心配ならケアをすること。まだいまからでも間に合う。やれることはある。きちんと過ちを認め、上映し直す。それが一番だと思う。そうでなければ支援しようがない。

映画祭は別にお花畑じゃない。作品を上映することに伴ういろいろなリスクは主催者だけでなく、映画祭を作っている人たち皆で背負っていくものだ。何も起きていないのに、行政の懸念だけで作品が取り下げになるなんて言語道断だ。

共催者は懸念を表明する立場じゃない。映画祭を主催、共催するという意味を取り違えている。広告主じゃないのだから。
