[KineJapan] Obayashi RIP

Very sad to hear this, although not unexpected. Even though it's one of his more neglected movies, Ijintachi tono natsu was the first Japanese film I saw, in what was probably its only UK TV screening back in 1990, when I was 16 years old and watching late night TV instead of revising for my GCSE exams that week. It blew me away, and there's a good chance that without that film, I wouldn't now be writing about Japanese cinema (especially horror) and living in Hiroshima with a Japanese wife. So I have a lot to thank Obayashi for.

RIP.

I was waiting on Aaron, who was a friend of the director, but the world situation must be putting him off his game. This was not unexpected, but the great Obayashi Nobuhiko passed this week. These days, we immediately wonder if it was the virus. But it was the stage 4 lung cancer he was diagnosed with four years ago, and through which he tirelessly worked.

Incredibly, Obayashi has a new film. It was to have been in theaters now, but the release date has been postponed because of the pandemic. Here is the homepage. Looks like loads of fun. Naturally.
