These are stunning. There have been glimpses of these graphic scripts in
various publications and as design elements in the DVD box set. And
Matsumoto-san gave me a copy of *Shiki Soku Ze Ku's* scenario for my
calligraphy book, so I had seen this. But this collection shows how it was
an important way that he approached filmmaking from conceptualization to
editing as a kind of scoring. Seeing them lined up like this is powerful.
By 1963, he was already *thinking graphically. *The storyboard for *For My
Crushed Right Eye* actually looks like a timeline in Premiere or FCP! Even
in thumbnail form they are a thing of beauty. There have been some bumps in
this project, and I'm thrilled to see it take off.
