I thought the film was phenomenal; the claymation in particular. I showed a still to students in my JPN doc film class, and several of them had vivid memories of parents recounting just how scary this moment was, in California history. One colleague recounted sleeping with a knife under his bed—at the age of 12, when he lived in SFO.  I think it was a huge topic of regional media, but didn't travel far outside, in those days. I would be curious to hear from people who grew up in the Christian/deathrock/metal/Chicano rock subcultures of the 90s and also saw the film. I was surprised not to find much on Svankmejer in my university library, but then I recalled I saw most of his stuff, and other works like it, in Japan…that link between (former Soviet, time-is-capital) E. Europe and Japan might be stronger than it is here…

It's a short that's been taking awards at the big animation festivals and is nominated for best animated short at the Oscars. It's  Just a Guy by Shoko Hara, an animated doc about serial killer Richard Ramirez's groupies. It's wild and disturbing and I watched it with my 90 year old parents. I had warned them that they were about to see some weird films, but that didn't prepare them for this madness. Really brilliant animation.
