[KineJapan] Sino-Japanese Connections in Independent Film Cultures (1989 – 2020)

There is a great outfit in Newcastle establishing a Chinese Independent
Film Archive (CIFA, a new life for an older archive project based in
Beijing). The core people are Sabrina Yu, Chris Berry, Luke Robinson, Lydia
Wu and Zhang Xianmin. I've been happy to help on their advisory board.
They're doing all sorts of valuable activities that are difficult in
today's China.

They've been running some very fine events during the pandemic, and now
they've released their first issue of an open access journal, *The Chinese
Independent Cinema Observer*. The theme is the relationship of the Chinese
Indies to Japan, and the writers are a mix of artists, scholars and
programmers (some of whom are on KineJapan). It's edited by Ma Ran (Nagoya
U) and Akiyama Tamako (Kanagawa U), and it's over 300 pages long (!) and
downloadable as a pdf. Also designed by the great poster
designer/experimental filmmaker Wang Wo!

Their website is equally rich. One other Japan connection there is a
collection of photographs from the Yamagata International Documentary Film
Festival, from both the festival and my collection.

A couple years ago, I was struck by a comment by Waseda's Nakajima Seio. He
suggested that Tokyo might be the best place in the world to study Chinese
independent film. When you read this special issue, you'll probably think
he's right!
