That sounds great, and long overdue! Here in Hiroshima they hold Obayashi in very high regard, one of their key 'home town heroes'. I'd love to see more work on Obayashi, especially often overlooked films like Ijintachi tono natsu, my personal favourite.

Thanks for mentioning that series. Actually, Aiko Masubuchi and I are working on a proposal for the series centered on Obayashi Nobuhiko. We’re hoping to develop it through a workshop, hopefully at Yale next academic year. So keep tuned for more news!

Dear Everyone,Edinburgh University Press has a series, ReFocus: International Directors. Each volume is edited by one or two people, gathering and organizing work from a number of scholars on a single director. So far there is no Japanese director represented. I selfishly think it would be great if one or two scholars on this list would consider proposing a volume on Masumura Yasuzo, for example, among any number of other candidates.Earl JacksonChair ProfessorForeign Languages and LiteraturesAsia UniversityProfessor EmeritusNational Chiao Tung UniversityAssociate Professor EmeritusUniversity of California, Santa Cruz
