In one of the first major awards announcements, Omori Tatsushi's Mother won the best picture award at the Mainichi Film Awards. Take Masaharu's Underdog won the most awards at four, including best actor. Kawase Naomi won best director for True Mothers.

The Mainichi are one of the few awards with different awards for staff or for animation and documentary. The Ofuji Noburo Award went to Iwaisawa Kenji’s On-gaku, the documentary awards to Hara Kazuo’s Reiwa Uprising, and the Tanaka Kinuyo Award to Kaji Meiko. Obayashi Kyoko was given a special award.
