To be fair, lots of things were probably being called syphilis at that
time. 梅毒 could just be a stand in for any number of sexually transmitted
infections but specifically  梅毒 refers to the purplish rash associated with
syphilis infections. Hence, "Plum poison." We might imagine the character
has a visible rash that she might be trying to cover up.
