Hello everyone,

My friend recently released a video essay/documentary on the production
history and narratives of the Gamera movies released during the Heisei
period of Japan. In case anyone is interested in watching, it was uploaded
on his youtube channel, and although it's in Portuguese, the subtitles can
be translated into English through the caption settings. He spent months
researching the behind-the-scenes of these films in order to deliver an
in-depth presentation of the context of Japanese cinema, in this specific
case Tokusatsu, and what made these films so special. I know there's an
appreciation for Kaijuu films among members of KineJapan so I thought it
might be interesting to post it here. Anyways, here's the link:

am very sad to say that Yoshida Kij? passed away yesterday. He was 89.
Many papers are to be found on the press, but here is a link towards the

This turned up when cleaning old files:?My handwritten memo: "Miura was an unknown cameraman selected by a Sojin club of sorts to receive $1,000 from Sojin to go to Hollywood. See
Tokyo Asahi Shimbun 4/11 1928." This accompanied a Xerox copy of a clipping I dated 5/1 ? from Tokyo Engei Shimbun with the headline ??????????????????????????and saying that the cameraman?Mitsuo Miura?for Yutaka Abe's "Modan Seisho" (Modern Bible) starring Tokihiko Okada, that was still in production has been sent for by Paramount for the Japanese scenes for "Madame Butterfly" that was in production, starring Gary Cooper and Sylvia Sydney. On the 30th of last month the party left for local filming at Kyoto, the Seto Inland Sea and Okayama. The group included someone from Paramount....
It was Cary Grant, of course, not Mr. Cooper!

That's very sad news. Rea Amit and I met him and interviewed him for
Midnight Eye, in 2009 I think.  He was very courteous and welcoming. He
booked a private room in the dining area of a posh hotel in Akasaka for the
occasion and treated us to coffee while we talked.

May he rest in peace.

up. I love what they?ve done this year, which is feature some of the most
prominent mini-theaters in Japan. Their choice of theaters is really smart.

Yatabe-san interviews both filmmakers and programmers. There are pages
devoted to the theaters and their programmers, who have selected the films
for streaming. There?s a mix of fiction and documentary.

a very nice place by the way, I visited the cinema on a heavy snow day

This two-day symposium Screens and Energy aims to explore the complex relations between screens and the energy systems they are part of. In recent years energy infrastructures have become understood as a pressing problem. An increasing number of scholars in humanities have recognized that this is not just a matter of engineering and governmental policy, but a matter of complex relations between culture, society, and ecology, ranging from human and nonhuman bodies to infrastructures and the earth. However, in the field of cinema and media studies, the relationship of media technologies to the energy systems of production, distribution, and consumption especially in East Asia is still largely under- examined. While eco-critical approaches have made inroads in East Asian film studies, they mostly focus on critical stances formulated within films on a narrative or stylistic level. Against this background the workshop is meant to create a space to discuss the important and timely issue of how to link up questions of media technologies, energy, and representation from a multitude of perspectives. Intended to kickstart a discussion, we hope the event will initiate new questions in media studies and other fields of the humanities.

Sad to hear that Ezawa Moeko passed away on the 26th at the age of 87. She debuted in Nikkatsu Roman Poruno, but quickly established herself as an essential character actor in film and TV. I showed Sai Yoichi's All Under the Moon this term, a wonderful film that is crucially supported by Ezawa's performance as the hero's mother. ??.
