TOHO Cinemas is under investigation for violating antitrust laws for pressuring distributors to not distribute films at other theater chains. This scheme is probably not news to anyone who knows the Japanese film industry, but now prosecutors are interested in a practice wherein TOHO Cinemas, the exhibition arm of Toho, threatened distributors, saying that they should contract with or privilege TOHO Cinemas when distributing films, or else TOHO, which takes up a major portion of the exhibition market, would refuse to exhibit any of the distributors films.
