Eija, I presume that the main consideration for YIDFF is tocoincide the festival with a holiday weekend, to wit Sports Day whichfalls on Monday October 9th next year. Indeed, most of the films areshown during that 3-day long weekend with quite slim pickings either side. Ialways thought that was to do with many of their potential audience coming upfrom Tokyo and other cities. But it might also be hall availability.
Yes, if I manage next year to afford flights from Europe– around the Russian landmass and doubtless more expensive – I would have likedto visit both. Declaring my personal interest, I suggest a move to ‘Respect theAged Day’ on September 18th, which also might fit better with the European teaching year. But then, that would clash with SanSebastian FF, who sometimes do a Japanese strand. The main thing that would getme to Yamagata, whatever the date,is if there were a full week of competition screenings.Roger

I started wondering how far (regionally) festival organizers look when deciding on the time period of their festival within the international/regional/national film festival circuit.
Take for ec. Yamagata Documentary FF 2023. YIDFF has marked days Oct 5 on. If Busan Film festival happens as it has been happening for its run of some 25 years, it will take place Oct 4th on. Meaning these two would completely overlap. Pre-pandemic YIDFF used to start Thursday the 2nd week of October, so it was possible for many to go both to Busan and YIDFF. As Busan is de facto the most important East Asian film festival now, many film critics, film festival programmers etc. would have to go Busan only in 2023 and skip YIDFF. Busan does have project markets etc. also for documentary filmmakers.
Or does YIDFF count as having completely different participants than Busan?
Naturally I understand that festivals cannot just decide the dates they want, but the supporters, such as the city of Yamagata might have offered them venues only during the period starting Oct 5th.
