From aaron.gerow at yale.edu Fri Dec 1 20:21:49 2023 From: aaron.gerow at yale.edu (Gerow Aaron) Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2023 20:21:49 -0500 Subject: [KineJapan] Yamada Taichi Message-ID: Yamada Taichi, one of the greatest screenwriters in Japanese TV history, passed away on the 29th at the age of 89. Yamada studied at Waseda University, where he became good friends with Terayama Shuji, After graduation, he joined the Shochiku studio, and studied under Kinoshita Keisuke. Under Kinoshita's recommendation, he started writing scripts for Kinoshita's TV dramas, and eventually became a freelance scriptwriter. He became a leader of the golden age of Japanese dramas <>of the 70s and 80s, when scriptwriters like Mukoda Kuniko and Kuramoto So reigned over the TV world. His dramas such as Kishibe no arubamu, Fuzuroi no ringotachi, and Otokotachi no tabiji are some of the classics of Japanese TV history. While it is not one of his more famous works, I often show Shatsu no mise (starring Tsuruta Koji and Yachigusa Kaoru) in my TV class and it is excellent. He also wrote screenplays for film (Shonen jidai) and won awards for his novels. For an authoritative study of Yamada's work, you can read Hase Masato's book Haishatachi no s?z?ryoku: kyakuhonka Yamada Taichi. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20231201/k10014274241000.html Aaron Gerow Alfred W. I had a photo I grabbed off the internet that I really wanted to use. I secured the rights, but the online photo was only 72 dpi and 300 X 168 pixels. Small. Very small. So I met the photo's owner and we took the printed photo to a place to get a scan done. When I got home, I was shocked to find they scanned at 72 and used a setting that blew out all the greys. Incredible. It was such a production to get the scan done that I fired up Photoshop to play and see what could be done. I discovered that recent versions of Photoshop have the ability to upscale photos. There are a few techniques to wrap your head around, so it might be tough if you don't know Photoshop. But here is a tutorial that introduces some key moves: https://youtu.be/lprshxl46ac?si=2dgRkd4LVDXJTmTH There are a few other tutorials out there. This is one of the more useful of the bunch. (I notice that Topaz and some other software is offering upscaling functions as well.) This is huge for our field. Framegrabs from DVDs and most digital movie files are only 72 dpi; for printing on paper you need at least 300 and a size set that's at least as big as the printed page. Usually, when you expand the size of a small photo you get pixelation. Photoshop can now smooth it all out! I was able to bump up the tiny image to 300 dpi. There are various changes to the image, so it requires tweaking. And I didn't test this much, so there might be unwanted artifacts or changes to the image that would make image analysis tricky. But it works. I think it's a game-changer for publishing in film and media studies. Markus -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It's a noirish female assassin film set the year after the 1923 earthquake and great fun. Very stylish. https://revolver-lily.com The plot pits the Navy's Yamamoto Isoroku against a nasty Army general. Both are after a huge pot of money in Shanghai that only the assassin can access?if she gets there before a deadline when the money goes poof. Said money will decide which service dominates Japan. If the Army gets all of it, it's an immediate war in China. If they split it, Yamamoto says he can fend off war for a decade (before leading the attack on Pearl Harbor exactly 82 years ago today, the real Yamamoto had lived and travelled in America and was not into the idea of a war with the US). [spoiler starts here] It's fabulous history, of course. But what really struck me was the ending. The Army general is alone in his office talking to someone unknown on the phone. He's reporting that he got his hands on the money and the other man is quite pleased. Thing is, he's suddenly speaking in intensely formal keigo, and the person on the other end of the line is not. One can only imagine a single person the nasty general would grovel to: Hirohito. I looked around at film reviews and no one mentions this, but such direct pegging of the Showa emperor for war responsibility is incredibly rare. I guess it was just ambiguous enough to slip through. Has anyone else seen this? Am I misreading it? Markus -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Mostly been successful, but whenever I have had them printed on paper the people at the printing company that are tasked with keeping one from making terrible printing decisions have invariably complained. I usually have had to add some noise to mask the regularity of the upscale process and that usually works sufficiently well enough to make it work. Obviously, this is only an issue if you plan to print things on paper. " In my experience, I haven't seen anything "invented". There's nothing in the upscaled version that wasn't there before. What you mention exists, but the ones that I have used have merely interpolated the spaces well enough to fill things in for clarity. Like no one has grown a nose that didn't have one before. Obviously, that's a discussion to be had, but downscaling a photo seems just as misleading since it wasn't at all what was intended. Taking away could be as suspect as adding? I don't know. A quick search revealed a well-timed show at the new 109 Cinemas Premium. This is in the new Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, the odd new sky scraper in the heart of Kabukicho that looks like it has frosty spikes midway and up tip top. This sits on the footprint of the old Milano Theater. This was one of the grand theaters of postwar Tokyo. With 1,500 seats, it was a great place to watch films. People still talk about their swan song in 2014, when they showed all their biggest hits over the years on 35mm. The building went down shortly after that. The new theaters are on the 9th and 10th floors. I worried upon arrival, as the first few floors are a very strange restaurant with a DJ playing anime tunes, and a very noisy game center. Thankfully, the chaos recedes when you go upward. The surprisingly small lobby has stunning views of West Shinjuku, a staff desk and kiosks. Huh. I pull up to a kiosk, select the film, then my seat, and then the bill comes up: ?4,500! I actually asked the desk attendant if that was for real. He smiled and affirmed the price. This was probably my last chance to see the Scorsese on a decent screen, and I was curious what this pricepoint was all about. So I hit the buy button and entered. It was interesting. Low lighting. High end seating. Stunning views of Kabukicho, the Toho Godzilla down below. It's an attempt at making the architectural space a big part of the movie-going experience, not unlike the strategy behind the silent era movie palaces. In interior corners of both floors, there are spaces with completely different interior designs that evoke different eras. The million dollar view isn't worth the price of the ticket, but then I discovered another part of the strategy. Popcorn and non-alcoholic drinks are free and tabehodai. There's also a bar with beer, wine, whiskeys and some mixed drinks, but those cost. Over at one of the entrances, I noticed they were playing Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. As I approached, I saw that it's a 35mm screening room, and they'll be showing films on 35 into the future. (A sign outside warns people that analog prints sometimes have scratches.) The theater itself has steep seating and wide reclining seats, each with a little table space next to the arm rest. There's a special trailer on the sound system, which they claim is the best set-up in Japan. It was "installed and checked" by Sakamoto Ryuichi, who gives a speech in the sound system trailer. They are selling a lot of Sakamoto goods in the gift shop, including LPs and programs from all the films he scored. The sound was, indeed, good. All in all, a wonderful, overpriced theater. Not sure I'll go again, unless I really feel like gorging out on the popcorn. The theater also had a strip of seats that were even wider, with wood cube-like enclosures to separate you from the people next to you. I asked about these on my way out. They're ?6,500 (!). But after the film, you can move to an incredibly cush lounge with city views. The first drink is free and the lounge is open until 3:00am. I wonder if this will work? BTW, the film was great. But I was annoyed at the subtitles. They pulled punches around issues of race. For example, Scorsese's references to anti-Semitism were all erased by substituting ? for "Jew." Considering what's going on in the world today, I thought this was really unfortunate and obnoxious. Markus -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Throughout our research there are hints here and there, but no overt political writing. The end of the 1932 diary, after their departure from Berlin, has them travelling back through China, with Kashiko writing down her brief impressions of the experience. That does not feature in our article. Perhaps Nagamasa?s arrest (based on entirely spurious charges), interrogation and release very shortly before their ?honeymoon? voyage began led them to be mindful and so apolitical in their writing. Subsequent journals written by Kashiko have yet to be explored in detail and perhaps this will encourage further work to be undertaken, not only on those writings but also on the period Nagamasa spent in Manchuria later.
