Kinema Junpo announced their awards for 2022. In recent years, they have only been publicly announcing the individual and picture awards, so as to make people buy the magazine in order to find out all the films in KineJun?s famous Best Ten.

I haven?t seen it, but I met the director at a literature conference back in October, the ?????. One thing that was interesting was that a man on the sponsoring committee actually wrote, produced and distributed a rebuttal to the main jist of the film?that people from hisabetsu buraku backgrounds are still undergoing discrimination. (As opposed to things being much better, from am elder generation POV.) I talked to the director, and it sounded like subtitles were in the works. He was getting help on some of the more complicated terminologies and vernaculars from a couple of academics (Ian Neary, I remember, maybe more). So I would not be surprised if it were available somehow. 

He seemed open to popping in to talk about the film (in the context of programming, classes). And had a lot to say about producing labors of love, his own trajectory, observational tendencies in doc filmmaking post-Wiseman, etc. 

I would love to work on getting it screened in LA, if anyone in the area is up for it, as my university is pretty broke, and only works with collaborations?

I?ve been trying to track down a DVD copy to buy with English subs of Dear Pyongyang, the 2005 doc that Yang Yonghi did. In the US, it was released by Typecast Films. I can?t find any traces of the company or a real market for the DVDs with subs, and wondered if anyone know what happened to the company, or if there might be plans in the works to re-release, given the very positive reviews of Yang?s latest film Soup and Ideology?

I'm posting here e message from a friend who is not on KineJapan I hope

My name is Akira-Kai Kitazono. I'm a third-year film student from the UK,
currently researching the Japanese Experimental Filmmaking movement
pre-2000s' as part of my Dissertation.
When researching for a chapter on the involvement of female experimental
filmmakers from Japan, I spoke with many curators and filmmakers, but one
filmmaker that came up often was ?tsuki Natsuko  ?????, a filmmaker whose
work has been of great interest to me. However, I haven't been able to view
any of her work or contact her regarding further information. As one of her
films was screened at the YIDFF film festival in 1997 (

have any contact information, or the way I could view Otsuki Natsuko's
works, and contact her regarding any further questions about her work.
She would be a critical filmmaker to mention in my research, and I'd love

Nikkatsu is reporting that director Masaru Konuma passed away on the 22nd
January.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Yamane Sadao, one of Japan's great film critics. While able to work with intellectuals like Hasumi, he also wrote for a popular audience and was a champion of program pictures (he also wrote a lot on manga). As an editor he, for instance, helped edit the groundbreaking journal Shinema 69. His collections of Japanese film reviews spanning several decades are amazing for their depth and breadth. At the same time, he did much for the field of film studies, helping put together such essential resources as the Gendai Nihon eigaron taikei or the recent Nihon eiga sakuhin daijiten. He helped me on a number of occasions and was always a pleasure to talk to at Yamagata and other festivals. A real gentleman. I got to translate a few of his writings, which I still use in class. He will be sorely missed.
