The collection is currently comprised of 83 boxes containing materials related to the filmmaking and other activities of the Japanese documentary filmmaker Noriaki Tsuchimoto (1928-2008), who is most famous for recording the struggles over the Minamata mercury poisoning incident and other environmental hazards. The collection description is as follows: The collection comprises the papers of Noriaki Tsuchimoto, a Japanese documentary film director, who directed films on various topics, including environmental issues, student activism, Minamata disease, nuclear power, corporate history (PR films), and Afghanistan. The collection includes manuscripts and documents about his films, including annotated scripts, production notes, shot, and budget sheets; research materials of various topics, including documents on the science of mercury poisoning; location and on-the-set photos; publicity materials; and film stills. It also contains Tsuchimoto?s correspondence with colleagues, as well as decades worth of his datebooks. The topics in his papers vary and include items ranging from labor union newsletters to court documents on cases involving colleagues. https://archives.yale.edu/repositories/12/resources/11735 After successfully offering this grant in FY 2022-2023, the Council will again offer up to four (4) grants in FY 2023-2024 to support research utilizing the collection at the level of up to $1200 for researchers traveling from North America and $2200 for those coming from outside North America. Grant funds will be disbursed in the form of reimbursement for travel, lodging, meals, reproductions, and related research expenses while on campus. Costs for computers, software, books and other subscriptions are not eligible. Holders of a Ph.D. or the equivalent are eligible to apply, as are graduate students who have completed all requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation. The competition is open to scholars in all parts of the world and from any discipline, but topics that make extensive use of the collection will be prioritized. Yale University faculty, staff, and students may not apply. The application deadline is Thursday, August 31, 2023. The grant must be used by Friday, August 30, 2024. All applications must be submitted electronically by attachment to eastasian.studies at yale.edu with ?Noriaki Tsuchimoto Research Grant? in the subject line. Applications must include a curriculum vitae and a two-to-three-page description (double-spaced) of the research project. Applicants should attach a list of some of the boxes that will be consulted using the Finding Aid of the collection: https://archives.yale.edu/repositories/12/resources/11735/collection_organization Applications from graduate students must be accompanied by a letter from the main faculty advisor attesting to the significance of the dissertation project and to the student?s completion of all other degree requirements. Within a month of their campus visit, award recipients should submit a 2-3 page (double spaced) summary of some of their research achievements, which may be posted on a Yale website. Award recipients may also be invited to participate in a symposium at Yale on Tsuchimoto and his era in the 2024-2025 academic year. Aaron Gerow Alfred W. This call for papers invites abstracts that consider Japanese cinema from refreshing and unusual perspectives. We are especially interested in papers that seek to redefine the field, pushing at the borders and boundaries of Japanese film studies, as well as work that may exist on the edges or fringes of the field, perhaps in dialogue with other disciplines, or multi-modal in nature. The conference will run parallel to Sheffield DocFest 2024, offering participants the opportunity to interrogate Japanese nonfiction cinema and media within the context of global film and the international film festival circuit. We hope this first re-iteration of Kinema Club in the ?post?-pandemic era will provide opportunities for collaboration: across geographies, disciplines, modalities, and generations. Applicants are encouraged to consider borders and boundaries in the widest possible terms, and topics may include (but are not limited to) the following: - The boundaries of ?Japan?: what constitutes ?Japanese? cinema and where is ?Japanese? cinema made and viewed? - What might it mean to approach the study of ?Japanese? cinema from the edges or fringes - drawing from disciplines other than film studies, or taking creative approaches? - Is there a ?lunatic fringe? in Japanese film studies and if so, what might we do with it? Conference Format: The format of this conference includes a variety of presentation types and styles. Ideally, this variation allows the conference to be as inclusive as possible, and include as many participants as possible?especially contingent faculty, early career scholars, graduate students, and non-academics. The conference will take place over 3 half-days, and each day will be dedicated to a different presentation format. - Day 1 presentations will take the form of traditional paper presentations of 20 minutes, organised into panels of 3 papers with 30 minutes Q&A at the end of all presentations. - Day 2 presentations will take the form of lightning round panels, with short ?provocation papers? of 10 minutes each grouped by theme into rounds of 3. A 60 minute Q&A and discussion will follow. - Day 3 is dedicated to roundtables of 5-6 participants, addressing key issues in the field. How to apply: The application process for this conference aims for maximum inclusivity. We have included a number of questions in this Google Form to gauge interest and availability. There will be no pre-constituted panels or roundtables. Participants are welcome to choose one or multiple presentation types in the Google Form, and the organisers will do their best to group panels by theme, topic, and interest, and with diversity in mind. Please complete the form by Friday 6th September 2023. Acceptance notifications will be with you by the end of September to allow maximum preparation time. Support to attend the conference: We?d like to make the conference open to as many participants as possible, so we ask that if you have research funding you consider using this to travel to the conference and stay in Sheffield. Catering and a conference dinner will be provided. For early career, unfunded, and independent scholars and graduate students: we have created a programme of support to help you apply for external funding to cover your travel and accommodation costs. A team of established scholars have volunteered to offer advice to applicants on applying to professional organisations and other competitive funding opportunities. If you would like to be considered for this support, please check the relevant box at the end of the application form. If your abstract is accepted, you will be paired with a mentor in your geographical region who will help you to apply for funding. Please note that mentors? time is limited. If your application to an external funding source is unsuccessful, the conference organisers will provide you with budget travel and accommodation funding. Please reach out to Jennifer Coates and Julia Alekseyeva at KinemaClub2024 at gmail.com with any questions regarding the conference. -- Professor Jennifer Coates Professor of Japanese Studies Departmental Director of Research & Innovation (DDRI) School of East Asian Studies (SEAS) University of Sheffield Office 4.21, Floor 4, Jessop West, 1 Upper Hanover St, Broomhall, Sheffield S3 7RA Recent publications: Coates, J. 2023. My question that I would like to raise generally is not a complaint by the way - I think all options of the three-option structure are terrific and it would be really rewarding to be part of any of them. My question is - are there others out there whose universities or research grants will support giving a paper but not support participation in a roundtable? I think those accepted as roundtable participants should think of a work around description to satisfy terms of the financial support (just a thought). One of the strengths of Kinema Club has been its innovative structures and it's the funding people who should adapt. But most importantly, it's so good to see Kinema Club back in business. Great point - I think in the first instance applicants could add this information at the end of the Google Form in the section marked 'Is there anything else you'd like the organizers to know?' That way, if a specific funding source that the applicant plans to use will only support a classic paper presentation, we can ensure that the application is not folded into any other type of panel or roundtable. We can also provide formal invitation letters for participants who require them for visa applications, internal university processes, or funding applications - we'll emphasise that participants are not only presenting in their chosen format but also participating in a range of discussions and activities over the course of the 3 days. The Kinema Club conferences on Japanese film and media have distinguished themselves over the years for their variety and inventiveness, ranging from workshops to full-fledged conferences, from themed symposia to sidebars of film festivals. This edition will be also be a new endeavor: a workshop focusing on workshopping articles or dissertation chapters by up-and-coming scholars of Japanese film and media. This will be the first Kinema Club since KCXIX, which took place at the University of Michigan in November 2019. A KCXX was supposed to take place in Frankfurt?s Nippon Connection in June 2020, but unfortunately that had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. We decided not to use that number and so the upcoming Kinema Club will be number 21. The Kinema Club in Sheffield in June 2024 will be Kinema Club XXII. The basic format will approximate those of previous Kinema Club workshops: o Papers will be due at least two weeks before the workshop and will be read by all participants beforehand. o Those who authored the paper will not read it out loud, but rather identify desired areas of discussion in no more than 5 minutes, leaving the majority of the time for discussion. o There will be 6-8 papers presented during the day. What differs from previous workshops is that presenters will be restricted to advanced doctoral students (ABD) and those within 3 years after finishing their PhD. In addition, 2-3 senior scholars will participate in the workshop and will offer written comments on all the papers presented. KC XXI is being supported by the Council on East Asian Studies, so those selected to present will receive support for travel and accommodations (hopefully full travel and two-nights at a hotel, but it will depend on the total cost). Meals will be provided on the day. Those not presenting will are welcome to join the workshop if they are willing to read the papers. The number of seats might be limited, however. The DEADLINE FOR PROPOSALS is August 15, 2023 o Submit a 250-word proposal summarizing the submission and describing its circumstances (is it a dissertation chapter, an article, a manuscript chapter, etc.?). Topics are restricted to Japanese film and media, broadly defined. o Include your name, current status, and contact information. o Those whose proposals are selected will be notified by September 1. o So as not to overburden other workshop participants, final submissions by those selected should be kept within 30 pages double-spaced. That means those wanting to workshop dissertation or manuscript chapters should select chapters within that length or certain sections of a chapter.
