That is very interesting to note that The First Slam Dunk took almost twice that of The Boy and the Heron.
Does anyone rememeber the last time that a Miyazaki film hasnt topped the Japanese box office?
Porco Rosso, maybe? Unfortunately the Eiren stats only go back 20 years.

Subject: [KineJapan] 2023 Box Office

The MPPAJ (Eiren) announced their statistics for the Japanese film industry in 2023. Basically both attendance and total box office were up by a slight amount, and Japanese films still commanded about 67% of the market. The number of films released also rose. The top 5 Japanese films at the box office were, in order:

The First Slam Dunk
Detective Conan
The Boy and the Heron
Kingdom
Godzilla Minus One

Again, animated films took the top three slots. For "art" films, Koreeda's Monster was number 21 and Kitano's Kubi was number 29. There were 34 Japanese films that made over one billion yen at the box office (and only 15 foreign films).
