Dear all,

I hope you are doing well. I am delighted to announce a publication of a new anthology, The World of the Benshi (LA: Yanai Initiative, UCLA, 2024), co-edited by Michael Emerich and myself. The book includes fascinating contributions from many members of this mailing list, including Dong Hoon Kim, Denise Khor, Colleen Laird, Chie Niita, Johan Nordström, Kotaro Shibata, and Manabu Ueda. There are more than 300 beautiful images from archives and private collections in the book. Special thanks to Markus Nornes for his valuable support.

Also, as some of you may already know, there will be a Benshi world tour of unprecedented scale, "The Art of the Benshi," in April 5-26, 2024. Starting from New York and then visiting Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, a group of the benshi and musicians from Japan will perform in six distinct programs of classic, newly restored, and rarely seen silent films from Japan and the US. Here is the link to this fantastic event!

Enjoy!

Best,
Daisuke
