Dear All,

I am pleased to share that my book ‘Visual Counterculture in Japan’ has
recently been published by Bloomsbury. By focussing on predominantly
photography and film from the 1960s to the present, the book investigates
the complex relationship between visual culture and counterculture in
specific political, ideological and cultural contexts. The central premise
of the book is that visuality does not simply record or document
counterculture, but rather, that visual processes, techniques and methods
have the capacity to actively contribute towards the dynamics of
resistance. Given the heightened sense of political tension across the
globe, the book provides a timely framework with which scholars can look at
images not simply as a visual artifact, but as a political tool that has
significant power.
