I want to let the list know that my four-year project to review all 29 of Uchida Tomu's surviving films (11 prewar films; 18 postwar films) has finally been completed. Today I submitted a post entitled "Coda," explaining my complex feelings about Uchida and the project, which appeared exactly four years after my very first post (the "Introduction") appeared.
The films were reviewed non-chronologically. The final review I posted (yesterday) was for the super-rare Toei film Rebellion from Below (1956), based on Schiller's play William Tell. (Yes, the hero shoots an apple -- actually a Japanese persimmon -- on his son's head.) I had to travel to Japan from New York twice (in 2022, while the country was still under COVID lockdown, and this year) to see several of the films.
I hope this site will be a valuable resource for those interested in Uchida's cinema and in the fascinating eras (from the early 1920s to the early 1970s) in which he worked.
The blog/website can be found at uchidatomu.com.
