Dear All,
Thank you from my side as well for letting us know, Alex. Roger was indeed one-of-a-kind, and a deeply valuable member of the Kinejapan orbit. Fully agreed that his many contributions at conferences, in post-film Q&As, and on KineJapan could sometimes (definitely not always!) be eccentric or even infuriating, but they always came from a place of deep knowledge and sense of stakes in cinema. He was a much too exceptional presence - a real citizen-researcher who gave a lot and introduced important perspectives to conversations too often only held between academic specialists.
I still remember how I once (at Nippon Connection) promised to grab a ticket for him at the German Film Museum, as he knew he would only arrive close to the screening; due to problems with preparing the projection I had rush down to the theater, and couldn’t notify the box office. Though we easily obtained a ticket for him in time, I will never forget the look on his face when he arrived at the theater, sought me out and asked for his ticket, and I had to tell him I hadn’t had time to snag one yet: Deep disappointment, not a small nuance of reproach, and even more worry if he would be able to see the film. I don’t think he ever forgave me, and above all it showed to me how much film and discussing it - film as a medium of connecting with others - meant to him. I will miss him and that rare level of commitment.

Dear all,
Thank you, Alex, for sharing this sad news with the group.
I had the pleasure of knowing Roger over several years in London, where we shared many screenings, conferences, and travels, as well as film and book club meetings at The Japan Society. He was a truly enthusiastic and committed cinephile, and it was always refreshing to talk with him about Japanese cinema as Earl mentioned.
By coincidence, we lived quite close to each other and often met in the neighbourhood, frequently chatting about our childcare duties—especially his care for his grandchild. I hadn’t seen him for a while and wondered if he might have been in Japan.
I’m very sorry and shocked to hear of his passing. He will be missed.
May he rest in peace.
Warm regards,
Alejandra Armendariz-Hernandez

Dear all,
I thought members of KineJapan might wish to be informed of the death of
Roger Macy, who often posed queries and engaged in discussion about
Japanese film via this mailing list. His son, who I don't know personally,
contacted me the other day by text to share the news.
Roger was a true enthusiast, whose interest in Japanese film and Japan in
general stemmed in part from family matters; his daughter had settled and
married in the country. He took his enthusiasm seriously and engaged in his
own private research into Japanese cinema. His opinions about the films he
watched and discussed were sometimes eccentric, even at times infuriating,
but always stimulating, and he was a source of entertaining and
knowledgeable conversation.
Although he had no academic post, he regularly travelled to conferences and
lectures on film and Japan-related themes, and voyaged across Britain, to
Paris and to the Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna to see rare movies.
Alas, this year he was not able to go to Bologna. When I visited him last
month in the nursing home to which his final illness confined him, he was
still lamenting that fact, as well as the failing eyesight which now
prevented him from watching films.
To many people on this list he will have been a name rather than a face,
and others will have known him only slightly. For anybody who knew him
well, the funeral will be on Saturday 8th November in London; I'm happy to
share details if messaged off-list.
Best wishes,
Alexander Jacoby

Dear Alexander,
Thank you for letting us know the sad news of Roger Macy's death. His love
of Japanese cinema was as boundless as his enthusiasm. He threw himself
into the appreciation of these films with a fervor rarely seen and
certainly underappreciated. A wonderful eccentric whose sincerity was as
disarming as it was refreshing. May his memory be a blessing.
