[KineJapan] Seeking info on "The Flame in the Fog"

Hi Dan,

You might try Gosfilmofond, where the grandson of Teikine’s founder located prints of What Made Her Do It? in the 1990s. (Teikine was the production company.) Gosfilmofond had multiple prints that had been in local circulation, used them to create another positive element representing the most complete version of the film possible, and that’s what was purchased in 1993. It had Russian intertitles. Restoration was by Yoneo Ota, Kyoto’s Toy Film Museum director, in collaboration Kaoru Mizuguchi (once the film curator at The Museum of Kyoto). More info on the restoration is in my chapter in The Routledge Handbook of Japanese Cinema. I did the subtitles, and the film was shown at Pordenone in 1999. My understanding is that Suzuki was popular with Soviet audiences.

Curious about this film frame published in the journal *Close Up* (January
1929).

The caption gives the English title *The Flame in the Fog**, *a  narrative
feature filmed almost entirely during heavy natural fog. Someone on social
media tells me JA.wikipedia says this is ????? (Light/Lamp in the Fog,
1926, Shochiku studio)
[Google translate says "Kiri no naka no akari" = A LIGHT IN THE MIST.

Elsewhere in the journal, director "J. Shige Sudzuky" [Shigeyoshi Suzuki]
is identified as a prolific Japanese filmmaker, who had directed some 30
films by then, often 'experimental' in style.
Sudzuky wrote some articles for *Close Up* about Japan's movie industry in
the late 20s and early 1930s. And the journal published a dozen or more
images he supplied it from his own films. One said to be produced in Japan
for Universal.

The journal illustrated Andor Krazna-Krausz's 1932 book review of Rudolph
Arnheim's *Film als Kunst* exclusively with frames from Sudzuky
'avantgardefilms,' including one titled *Jazz and Love. *The review does
not refer to him or any of his films, or even to Japan.

The only Suzuki's silent film I find much about in English is *What Made
Her Do It?* (???????????, *Nani ga kanojo o s? saseta ka*) 1930.
That one is viewable.
Are any other Suzuki silents availabe?
