Hello. I am currently teaching Japanese Cinema History and Japanese Pop Culture at Kwansei Gakuin University in Japan, where I reside. Some of the people in this list already know about my interest regarding director Hiroshi Shimizu.I am aIso a huge collector of anything related to his work and have been doing research for a number of years which I hope to publish soon. This time I am contacting you to inform about a crowdfunding project to digitise one of his films: Children of the Great Buddha.
The idea is to digitise the film so that it can be better preserved, shown more often in Nara and elsewhere and donate a copy to Todaiji Temple, the main location of the film. You can read all the necessary information on the page:https://readyfor.jp/projects/daibutsusama-kodomotachi/announcementsI also contributed a small essay in English regarding the film available in the 活動報告 Activity Report section.Considering that the National Film Archive of Japan just started its own crowdfunding campaignafter the government dramatically slashed its financial support by over 40%, it is of the utmost importance that initiatives like this highlight people's will to preserve their film history for future generations and expose the national institutions lack of interest and foresight in preserving one of the world's most important cinema cultures.Whatever financial contribution and/or media publicity will be invaluable, especially taking into account the current situation.Thank you so much in advance.
