One old standard I find too often overlooked by beginners who are
tempted by more modern, glossier, color-photograph-full publications is
the GOLDEN GUIDE to Butterflies and Moths by Zim. Excellent
information, covers commonest representative species of US with range
maps to clarify distributions, and superb (non-photographic) color art.
Inexpensive enough to buy multiple copies.
