medflies in Tampa

We had exactly what you describe here in the San Jose, CA area about 15 years
ago. I remember covering my truck with old blankets when the helicopters came
over. They did get rid of the medflies and I never saw any reports of other
insects going extinct.

As far as eating fruit after malathion spraying, we actully had some people
drink the stuff to show it wasn't poisonous to humans. They didn't get sick.

As distasteful as widespread malathion spraying appears, it didn't seem
to cause any problems I ever heard of around here.
