Dead Black Eastern Swallowtails?

Dear EE:

If the pupae are still flexible they may very well be ok.  If they have bcome
 blackish or dried and stiff they are dead.  Looking at them so the sun shines
 through them will tell you also whether or not they are healthy also.  If they
 are not it will illuminate the interior somewhat and the dried up material
 will be visible.  Good pupae for that species do quite well in the frig for
 the winter if they are brown but the green ones seldom diapause.
