Thanks to John Shuey for a useful and informative post relating to habitat
burns and the Karner Blue.

One additional point which sticks in my mind from a visit to the Barrens
in the mid-80s is the claim that fire was *required* to crack open the
outer husk of lupine seeds so they would germinate.  Since this is the only
foodplant of the KBB, it would imply that fire is indeed an essential
component of habitat maintenance.
