stinging caterpillars

Io Moth.  Automeris io.  My book says "The caterpillar's spines cause a
painful stinging if they penetrate human skin."   They grow to three
inches, so the sucker that got you should have been a pretty good-size
creature.

What do you think?  Every bug book has a picture of an Io Moth
caterpillar, so look it up and see if that's your assailant.
