black ants

If anyone has answers, I would appreciate it.  I have black ants crawling
around my kitchen.  They are about ? 1/3 inch or so, maybe a little less.
Anyhow they only come out when it is warm.  I have seen them crawling around
outside on the foundation.  I have people tell me that they are carpenter
ants, others say they are just plain black ants (whatever that means).  If
there are pictures available that I could compare them to I would appreciate
the pics, or links.  I am don't want to spray for wood chewers if that is
not waht they are.  Anyone with a clue, please respond via email
