I agree. I have no problem with natural selection as a mechanism inducing
improbable changes in gene frequencies. What I do question is the
assumption that this is the only process responsiblefor, or necessary to
explain, resemblance not correlated with immediate relationship, or that
without selection there would be no comparable evolution of variation.

Ken Philip also observed:

So the statement that "Natural selection could _never_ do _that_!" is a bit
suspect these days...

I don't recall making this statement, but I can stand to be corrected.
