Greetings Leps-Listers,
Due to some renovations on my home and the addition of a deck, I now have room
for several vines. I prefer that they be attractive to people, as well as
butterflies. I have three questions that some of you may be able to answer.
1. The new Park Seed catalog lists Aristolochia elegans, which it calls
"Calico Flower". Has anyone had any luck attracting wild Pipevine
Swallowtails (Battus philenor) to this vine as a host plant?
2. I recall that there was a thread a few weeks ago about Aristolochia, but I
don't remember if anyone posted a source of seeds or plants. Can someone
suggest a source for Aristolochia macrophylla, Dutchman's pipe?
3. I have places for more than one vine. Can anyone suggest other vines that
have been particularly good for you as a nectar/host plant for butterflies
(other than Passaflora sp.)?
I live at the border of USDA zones 6 and 7 in the Upper Piedmont of North
Carolina.
Thanks,
Dennis Burnette
