RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP and RESEARCH TECHNICIAN POSITION

BIODIVERSITY ASSESSMENT OF BUTTERFLIES

DR. DIANE DEBINSKI
DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL ECOLOGY
IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

Dear Colleagues,

I have funding for two positions starting in late May, 1998. Please feel
free to forward this message. Details below:

RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP FOR GRADUATE STUDENT
  - Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem

The first position is for a M.S. or Ph.D. student to work on a research
project focusing on biodiversity of butterflies in the Greater Yellowstone
Ecosytem. This project is part of a larger study entitled "Modelling
Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Montane Meadows and Biodiversity in the
Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem." The research focuses on using remotely
sensed habitat categorizations to predict species distribution patterns.
Preliminary data have been collected, and there is funding for at least two
more field seasons of work.

Responsibilities: Working with team of biologists and geographers to
collect data on butterflies, birds, and plants in both the Gallatin
National Forest and in Grand Teton Nation Park. Must have the ability to
work as a cooperative team player. Data analysis and report writing as
part of the research assistantship duties. Primary duties would focus on
lepidopteran communities. A portion of the data collected will be used for
a dissertation or thesis.

Qualifications: Applicant must be highly motivated, and interested in
extensive fieldwork under demanding conditions (camping during part of the
field season, moving camp every 2 weeks, hiking 3-7 miles per day, bad
weather conditions), and have the ability to work as a team on both
butterfly and bird surveys. Excellent academic credentials required (min
GPA 3.25), preferrence given to students with lepidopteran expertise.
Preference also given to students with community ecology background, GIS
and database management skills.

Stipend: 12 month at $1220/mo, in-state tuition, and health benefits.

Closing date: Feb. 28 or until position is filled. Position begins in
late May, 1998.

names of references to the address below.

RESEARCH TECHNICIAN
- Midwestern Prairie States

Isolation of Butterfly Populations in Fragmented Prairie Ecosystems: This
project uses butterflies as a model organism to examine the effects of
habitat fragmentation on butterflies. A seven state study of midwestern
prairies was initiated in 1997, focusing on biodiversity as a function of
prairie isolation, management and size. A research technician is needed to
aid in data collection for the summer of 1998.

Qualifications: Applicant must be highly motivated, and interested in
extensive fieldwork under demanding conditions (camping during part of the
field season, working in the field under hot, dry conditions, extensive
travel throughout the summer across seven states in the midwest, and living
out of a suitcase), and work well with others. Good academic credentials
required, preference given to students with lepidopteran expertise.

Stipend: $1120/month

Closing date: March 15 or until position is filled. Position begins in
late May and continues through mid-August.
