promethea camouflage?

How the heck do promethea larvae expect to stay camouflaged when they
have those bright red plastic-y tubercles on them??  Are promethea
inedible?  (In fact, how do cecropia deal with this?  I can't understand
why they would be red and yellow and blue.  Seems crazy.)
