The other night I opened the back door and on the top step I saw a very
large caterpillar who had assumed a head-to-tail position in the shape
of a doughnut.

The caterpillar was ~ 15mm wide, heavily bristled in black and red skin
alternating in bands.

The caterpillar was ~ 12cm long from tip to tip but was curled in a
doughnut about 5cm in diameter.

This was after a heavy rain. We are under live oaks in Panama City, FL
on the Gulf of Mexico.

Can anyone identify?

Thanks.

May
