All give a brownish or redish blast from the end of the abdomen at first
flight, left over metabolic material from metamorphosis in the pupa --
which has created historic events "red rain" etc.
Saturnid moths etc. consume no nutrients or liquid during their adult
lifespan and so there is no "residue"
I have observed butterflies, of several families, sitting at a wet spot
and pumping clear liquid out the end of the abdomen as fast as they sucked
it in through the proboscis.
