The weather here has been cooler, windy, with occasional rain. Today
(4/28/99), I made a few stops along Hwy 87 in Maricopa and Gila counties.
Not a lot of activity, but there were a number of butterflies out.

Pine Creek, Maricopa Co.:

Libytheana carinenta (American Snout) - 6
Heliopetes ericatorem (Large White Skipper) - 1

Sycamore Creek, Maricopa Co:

Limenitis arthemis (Red Spotted Purple) - 2
Junonia coenia (Buckeye) - 2
Eurema mexicana (Mexican Yellow) - 1
Papilio multicaudata (Two Tailed Swallowtail) - 1
Heliopetes ericatorem (Large White Skipper) - 2

East Verde River, Gila Co:

Junonia coenia (Buckeye) - 4
Papilio multicaudata (Two Tailed Swallowtail) - 3
Eurema sp? - 3
Battus philenor (Pipevine Swallowtail) - 1
Colias philodice (Clouded Sulpher) - 1
Plebejus acmon (Acmon Blue) - 4
Phyciodes sp? - 1
Chlosyne acastus (Sagebrush Checkerspot) - 1
Pyrgus communis (Common Checkered Skipper) - 1
Two other unidentified skippers

The Crescentspot is stunning, but it looks more like orseis (which is a
California endemic) than any of the other western species. Very contrasting
checkered appearance on upperside with white crescent scaling on underside.
