Point Pelee National Park (Ontario) Butterfly Count Results

As reported on Sunday, August 8th on the Toronto Rare Bird Hotline, a
description of the preliminary results of the Point Pelee (Ontario)
Butterfly Count, held on August 8th.

There were 44 species identified and during the count week, a white M
hairstreak was also counted - the 3rd for Pelee this year.

Highlights included:

1 variegated fritillary
5 Acadian hairstreak
1 Milberts tortoiseshell
1 gray comma
128 common sootywings
63 giant swallowtails
6 snout
37 gray hairstreaks
138 buckeyes

In numbers lower than expected were:

2 olive hairstreaks
1 little yellow
5 hackberry butterflies
5 tawny emperors

Also, at Second Marsh near Oshawa, east of Toronto, 5 buckeyes were
recently counted.
