The LepSoc post meeting observation and photographic trip into Sonora
led by Jim Brock, yielded some 130 species from the lush green monsoon
season countryside.
We drove down to Hermosillo and Kino Bay on August 10 (K). On August 11
we headed southeast on hiway 16 from Hermosillo, stopping at bridge over
the Rio Matape at San Jose de Pima (P) checking the Angel-wreath and
baccharis in the hills west of the Rio Yaqui (W) and the baccharis east
of the Rio Yaqui on the way into Yecora (Y) through the Sierra Madre
Oriental. On the third day we checked the dirt road into and the creek
bottom at the village of Santa Ana west of Yecora (S) and the beginning
of the road into Santa Rosa (R) and the Barranca Honda (B).
On the fourth day we headed east of Yecora on 16 to the Rio Maycoba and
the Rio Rediagoso (M). On the fourth day we checked Tepoca Canyon (T)
and some of the baccharis and angel-wreath on the way toward Hermosillo
(H). Here is a species list. Species diversity seemed to be lower than
expected - but only an expert in the region such as Jim would notice
this.
We used the Butterflies of Sonora, Mexico checklist compiled by Wanda
Dameron.
