No argument there. We also have truly eusocial mammals--evolution explores
all sorts of byways. But most mammals are not eusocial, and most vertebrates
are K-strategists, most insects r-strategists.
I find the stink bug narrative interesting as showing the effects of
habituation, but unconvincing as regards pain reception by insects. It
might be useful if there were an insect physiologist on this list, who
could tell us if Wigglesworth and Chapman need updating on this subject.
