John,

A handy short guide to Latin and Greek roots of scientific words is

Borror, Donald J. 1960. Dictionary of Word Roots and Combining Forms.
Mayfield Publishing Company, Palo Alto, CA.

A guide to the etymology of the generic names would be great, but I have
never seen one. I believe the family names are mainly those of minor
gods, muses and such, but they are taken from the type genus for the
family. Thus Pieris -> Pieridae, Papilio -> papilionidae.
