The upper sides of hairstreak wings are showy and bright-coloured (as
such things go).
When these wings are revealed in flight it is easy to spot the little
guys. When the wings fold in repose, the colors disappear. 
If you believe in reasons, you can perhaps extract one from these
observations. 
Cryptic coloration combined with startling flashes of color may be an
inconvenience to bug-eaters as well as students of butterflies.
