Well, I'm home at last (and the children are getting reacquainted). I only
had one hour to play with, so my son and I headed up Ortega Highway towards
Lake Elsinore, CA. At the top of the mountains, overlooking the lake, we
took a short walk to see what we could find. The morning fog and haze
lifted, so that by 1:00 p.m. things were very clear and warm. Two months
ago, things were much greener up there, although relatively dry and frost
burned. Now, things are mostly browning up. Still, there are many plants
in bloom and the butterflying was not too bad. Here's what we found:
Papilio eurymedon (Pale Swallowtail)
Pontia protodice (Checkered White)
Euphilotes battoides (Bernardino Blue)
Plebejus lupinus (Lupine Blue)
Apodemia mormo (Mormon Metalmark)
Speyeria callippe (Callippe Fritillary)
Coenonympha tullia california (California Ringlet)
