Doug and others,
Luehdorfia longicaudata is a bona fide species. It is a species "described"
by Lee in 1982. He gave a lecture titled "Three species of Luehdorfia in
China"
at the convention of Lepidopterists' Society of Japan in 1981. It's abstract
appeared in Yadoriga 107/108 (magazine published by the Lepidopterological
Society of Japan) in 1982. This abstract is generally perceived as the
description
of the species since he didn't properly describe the species either before
or after
the lecture. Chou didn't think that way and gave it a name Luehdorfia taibai
in his
Monographia Rhopalocerorum Sinensium in 1994.
General features of the butterfly are closer to L. japonica than other
Luehdorfia
species (puziloi, chinensis), but wings are narrower compared to L.
japonica.
*Kudo and Inaoka crossed L. longicadata with other species of Luehdorfia in
1995.
The only combination in which F1 adults were obtained was between
longicaudata
(female) and puziloi (male). The food plant is Saruma henryi
(Aristolochiaceae).
Saruma is closely related to Asarum (Asarum species are food plants of
japonica,
puziloi and chinensis). The butterfly is found in limited areas in Shaanxi,
Sichuan
and Hubei in China. Flight period is from mid April to early May.
* Tadashi Kudo and Shigeru Inaoka (1995)
Interspecific crossing between Luehdorfia longicaudata and
other species of the Genus Luehdorfia Cruger,
Butterflies No. 11, the Butterfly Society of Japan
