As far as I know the original reference for this split was as follows:
Mentzer, E. von, Moberg, A. and Fibiger, M. 1991. Noctua janthina (Denis &
Schiffermuller) sensu auctorum a complex of three species. Nota Lepidoptera
14(1): 25-40.
I don't have a copy of the paper itself. The third species, Noctua tertia,
is apparently confined to south-east Europe.
