The most accessible information is available in Scott's 1986 book
The Butterflies of North America (Stanford U. Press).

A more recent treatment, mainly condensed from my research papers in
1987 Quaestiones Entomologicae 23: 198-315 and 1994 Evolution 48: 408-422,
is in American Butterflies 1996 Volume 4: 10-17 (particularly the
range map for Papilio machaon and its subspecies).
