Thank you for this information.  It is all very, very useful to me.

I expect that the key is probably debris food that has fallen
under the stove & fridge, since all my cupboards seem
untouched and clean.  (Almost every food item is sealed.)

I will certainly have an exterminator do what they can about
the carpet beetles (monthly spraying for over a year seems
recommended) and will be more diligent at vacuuming away
dust and such that accumulates where they were found.
