The CANADIAN TIGER SWALLOWTAIL was first described by Linne as *Papilio
antilochus* on the basis of a specimen collected by Pehr Kalm, apparently
on the lower St Lawrence during his expedition in Quebec. Verity reported
on this specimen in 1911. Unfortunately Linne referred to this species at
least one illustration that was a cariacature, but which later authors have
taken to be the type and of a chimaera or manufactured specimen. Hence this
perfectly valid name has not been used. Rothschild & Jordan had apparently
not seen the surviving Linnean (Kalm) specimen that Verity examined.
This species seems to be clearly distinct from *P. glaucus* and *P.
rutulus* with both of which it hybridizes on a very small scale where
ranges overlap.
