Although Paul is not wrong that there can be psychological responses to 
perceived exposure in the absence of true exposure (or for that matter 
in the presence of true exposure), it would be dangerous to believe that 
that is the only response.  Many volatile organics are neurotoxicants 
that can cause acute or chronic (or sometimes both) effects on the 
nervous system.  Others are indeed carcinogenic.
